In 1997, during the Dutch commemorationperiod of May 4th and 5th, I made an installation in a shopwindow in Staalstraat, in the former Jewish quarter of Amsterdam. Research proved that in 1942 all inhabitants were rounded up and deported to Auschwitz. As part of an earlier work in this place, I created a new site-specific context about remembering and commemoration. For 1 night, on May 4th 1997, I decorated the shopwindow with books about remembering the war and holocaust such as; "The Texture of Memory, by James Young, "In Memoriam" with all the names of the deported Jews from The Netherlands, Death books of Auschwitz, "Verfilmd verleden" the use of Staalstraat 13 as a filmset for an American Anne Frankfilm, "Asservate" with reproduced objects from deathcamps in combination with multiples, photo's, leporello's, boxes and floor-rubbings that I made about the same subject and pieces of the older installations.
